Recently awarded a gold medal at the 2022 San Francisco International Spirit Challenge, Yuza First Edition is the very first whiskey from the young distillery founded in 2017 in the town of Akumi in the Yamagata region.

This first edition is a blend of single malts aged for 3 years in bourbon casks, carefully selected from those filled from November 2018 to January of the following year, which is the distillery's birth period, bottled at cask strength to emphasize the flavor of the American oak barrel itself. In a word, the taste characteristic is "clear & airy", which is evident when tasting with a greedy and fruity scent of honey, vanilla and apricot that is revealed in a smooth and silky texture.

The distillery is located in the town of Yuza at the foot of the famous Mount Chokai, where beautiful springs can be seen everywhere and which in 1996 was certified as one of the 100 best water towns (Ministry of Land Management, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism). The whisky produced at the distillery is based on the concept of "TLAS", which stands for Tiny, Lovely, Authentic and Supreme.

The distillery

The distillery Yuza Distillery

Founded in 2017 in the city of Yuza, it's the first and only whisky distillery in Yamagata Prefecture. Based near Mount Chokai, the distillery enjoys a climate where the snow is regularly exposed to sea breezes, creating a favorable combination for an abundant source of cold, pure water obviously crucial in crafting the distillery's whiskies. .


Created by Kinryu Corporation, the distillery inherits the spirit of the nine sake brewers who founded the company. A spirit that is expressed through the concept of TLAS for "Tiny, Lovely, Authentic and Supreme". The distillery is indeed particularly small and pretty but with the ambition to create authentic whiskies of "supreme" quality.


Operational since 2018, the distillery produces only strictly Japanese whiskies, in accordance with the criteria established by the Japan Spirits & Liqueurs Makers Association, and in limited quantities. Their first single malt has been released in 2022 and is already promising with a first award collected at the International Spirit Challenge in San Francisco 2022 (gold medal).
