Nine Leaves Last Drops

This rare edition marks the end of a unique artisanal journey and the beginning of a new legacy, now carried forward by La Maison & Velier, which has acquired the last stocks of aged rum and the final batches of white rum from the distillery.

This rum reveals an exceptionally pure nose, where delicate aromas of fresh sugarcane and honey blend harmoniously, enhanced by floral notes and a subtle mineral touch, reminiscent of the pristine water source used in its creation. On the palate, the attack is silky and precise, unveiling a rich aromatic intensity with hints of tropical fruits, light caramel, and soft spices. The long and elegant finish is marked by a subtle freshness and a refined persistence, reflecting the exceptional craftsmanship of Yoshiharu Takeuchi.

Nine Leaves Last Drops is crafted from Kokuto sugar, a specialty of the Okinawa archipelago, and exceptionally pure underground water. The fermentation process, which lasts about four days, develops a remarkable aromatic richness. Distillation takes place in Forsyth’s pot stills—one inspired by Chichibu and the other in the Glenmorangie style—offering a perfect balance and a uniquely complex profile. After distillation, the rums are aged in various casks, stored either in a warehouse subject to significant temperature variations or in an abandoned mine, where high humidity and low temperatures create an ideal maturation environment.

The story of Nine Leaves is deeply personal. After working alongside Ichiro Akuto, founder of the Chichibu whisky distillery, Yoshiharu Takeuchi developed a passion for rum, adopting an artisanal approach inspired by single malt techniques. From fermentation to distillation, from barrel filling to bottle labeling, he meticulously handled every aspect of the distillery, ensuring that each expression reflected his vision and dedication. In late 2023, after 10 years of operation, he made the difficult decision to close the distillery and sell the entire stock of aged rums, along with the final batch of white rum, to La Maison & Velier, ensuring the continuity of his legacy.

The first series of five bottlings is inspired by the traditional Japanese card game Unsun Karuta, dating back to the late 17th century during the Edo period, with each label unveiling a different card from the collection. This nod to Japanese history enhances the exclusive and symbolic character of Nine Leaves Last Drops, making it a true collector’s piece that celebrates the artistry of Japanese rum. Future editions will follow, perpetuating the legacy of Nine Leaves through exceptional releases.
